Natural Wonder lies on the
west side of the rugged Sangre de Christo Mountains in southern
Colorado. Its magnificent view is a breathtaking and picturesque.
It is one of the great wonders that is created by nature.
North America's tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against
the mountains.
It is a geologic wonderland,
containing over 30 square miles of massive dunes. It became
a national monument in 1932. With the passage of the Great San
Dunes National Park and Preserve Act, resources currently also
include alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000' in elevation,
ancient spruce and pine forest, grasslands, and wetlands to
protect the vast ecosystem. They support diverse wildlife and
plant species.
