These sand dunes are located in southern
Colorado. They are the tallest dunes in North America, rising
over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The 30 square miles of dunes became a national monument in
1932. It is a geologic wonderland. With the passage of the
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Act of 2000 resources
now also include alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000'
in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands
of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands--all habitat
for diverse wildlife and plant species. (Info: National Park

光と影のかもし出す芸術はモノクロ写真の得意とするところかもしれませんが、暖かさや微妙な変化を感情表現として出す点ではカラーはなかなかのものです。しかしながら、この光の強弱・影の強弱だけで、そしてコントラストの加減や流れによって表情や意図を映し出すにはやはりモノクロに魅力があります。
太陽が高く上っている時にはそれほど強い感情表現をしない砂丘群も日の傾き、そして太陽光の変化によって影を登場させ思わぬ別天地を描き出すこともあります。広角で引きつけても、望遠で前面の景色の一部を借りて撮影しても、それぞれの場所とタイミング、そして与えられたギフトによって撮る構図が変わってきます。
カラー写真とは違ったモノトーンの魅力を砂丘の表情を通して紹介します。
